New milestone for the EFTI Regulation
The eFTI Regulation represents a transformative move from paper-based documentation to standardized electronic data exchange across all modes of transport. By July 2027, secure, certified eFTI platforms will allow transport operators to share standardized freight data seamlessly with authorities and business partners. These platforms will integrate effortlessly into existing IT systems, creating a more efficient, transparent, and sustainable freight transport sector. The digital exchange of information will reduce administrative burdens for transport operators and national authorities, enhance data security, and simplify compliance with both EU and national freight regulations.
Member States can now begin setting up the necessary IT infrastructure to facilitate eFTI-compliant operations. Over the coming years, several key milestones will ensure a smooth transition:
- January 2025: Member States can start developing IT systems based on the specifications outlined in the first eFTI acts. These systems will allow authorities to check transport information digitally.
- September 2025: The European Commission will adopt the remaining implementation specifications, detailing functional and technical requirements for eFTI platforms and service providers, as well as rules for certification.
- January 2026: eFTI platforms and service providers will be able to prepare for operations. National authorities may begin accepting data stored on certified eFTI platforms for inspections.
- July 2027: The eFTI Regulation will become fully applicable. Member State authorities will be required to accept electronic transport information submitted via certified platforms.
